Fire Services - Smoke Alarm Bylaw
Tweet
Smoke alarms save lives! It doesn't get any simpler than that... and this is why Fire Departments across Ontario, the country and the entire North American continent are so passionate about having
working
smoke alarms in every dwelling. The
Fort Erie Fire Department's
Public Safety Officer, Doug Atkins, currently is working with his public education volunteers to do a home by home smoke alarm program throughout the entire Town. They offer valuable home fire safety information and will even provide you with a new battery and/or smoke alarm if you can not provide one for yourself.
There is
NO
excuse for not having a working smoke alarm in your home. Smoke alarms shall be installed as per the manufacturer's instructions. Most instructions locate the alarm on the ceiling or walls (within 12 inches of the ceiling). Kitchen and bathroom areas should be avoided to prevent false alarms. Batteries should not be removed for other appliances, toys and television remotes. Smoke alarm batteries should be replaced a minimum of annually but many people have adopted the bi-annual approach with the changing of our clocks.
The smoke alarm by-law requires that smoke alarms be located on every level of all dwellings.
For any information regarding smoke alarms, please contact Public Safety Officer, Doug Atkins, at 905-871-1600, extension 2603.
