Councillor Shular was first elected in November 2003 to serve the residents of Ward 2 who live in the neighbourhoods surrounding the Peace Bridge. Councillor Shular was re-elected in 2006 and is starting his third term of Council in 2010.
Councillor Shular is a life-long resident of Fort Erie who has over 30 years of experience in sales and marketing in the industrial sector. He is married to Susan who worked for many years as an OR Nurse at the Douglas Memorial Hospital.
Councillor Shular has been an active member in a number of community organizations including being Past President, Past Governor, Past Deputy Governor Past District Treasurer and 40 year Life member of the Fort Erie Kinsmen; Past Master of the Palmer Masonic Lodge and current Treasurer; Past District Deputy Grand Master Niagara B, 32o Scottish Rite Mason; Past President of the Niagara Shrine Club; and member of the Rameses Temple. Councillor Shular also holds the title of “Right Worshipful Brother” with the Masons. Councillor Shular has also served as Past Director of the Fort Erie Chamber of Commerce and is a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 71. Councillor Shular takes great pride in being a recipient of the Hal Roger Fellowship Award (#45 in Canada).
Councillor Shular also served as Vice Chair of the Fort Erie Gaming Corporation upon its inception and helped develop the policies that to this day direct the use and allocation of gaming revenues. Councillor Shular is presently a member of the Board of Directors of the Community Gaming Development Corporation and previously was Council’s representative on the Fort Erie Public Library Board.
Councillor Shular has served as Chair of the Community and Development Services Committee that oversees the Planning, Building, Fire and Gaming/Community Health functions of the municipality and as Chair of the Infrastructure Services Committee that oversees Water, Wastewater, Roads, Fleet, Parks , Cemeteries and Facilities and will be serving as Chair of the Corporate Services Committee beginning this term.
He also has participated as a member on a number of Town Committees including the Dangerous Dogs Appeal Committee, Street Naming Committee, Traffic Coordinating Committee and Court of Revision.
An avid golfer, traveller, community supporter (fundraiser for the Head Injury Association and Past Director of the E.J. Freeland YMCA), and Bills Fan, Councillor Shular also enjoys being a Minor Sports/Football Coach.
